Sustainability: Keeping Dementia Programs Active Years After Initial Funding Ends

Funding for dementia programming is often time limited, and early planning and flexibility is necessary to have the best possible outcomes for sustaining successful programs. In this webinar, participants will hear about two programs that have been sustained years after initial program funding ended. Southern Maine Agency on Aging received funding for an ACL dementia grant in 2014. During their grant period, they developed an expanded Meals on Wheels assessment that integrated questions related to dementia. The assessment proved successful in helping to identify people living with dementia in the community and has been maintained since the end of the grant project in 2017. Southern Maine Agency on Aging will talk about the impact of ACL funding and how they worked to maintain their original program. Michigan Department of Community Health was awarded an ACL dementia grant in 2016. During their grant period, they implemented caregiver trainings focused on basic dementia information, brain health and behavior, and activities for people living with dementia. After the project ended in 2020, the Department of Community Health worked with the Michigan Area Agencies on Aging (AAA) to adapt the training and handed over management and dissemination of the trainings to the AAA network. In this webinar, participants will learn about how the caregiver training was adapted and how it is being sustained by AAAs.
